Wireless Communications - GPS Tracking

Question
QUESTION: I want to protect my PC by putting a GPS locator in it.
I do not know nothing about it. Do I need to pay to someone
for using a service, if so how much, and how much is the
price of the device? How does it work, does it use gsm to
send the data or a satellite or something else, can it work
anywhere in the world? And some other important notes if
any?

ANSWER: Hello Branko

Your idea is a good one -- to somehow protect your laptop PC with a tracking device so you can locate it and do something if it is lost or stolen.

Yes, one could put a GPS receiver into a laptop.  In fact you can buy laptops which have GPS receivers built in.  The problem with adding a GPS to a laptop that does not have it built=in is there is very little room inside a laptop PC.

Another problem with using satellite navigation systems on a PC is that GPS does not work well indoors, where the radio signals from the satellites are attenuated by building materials.  There are some dual mode tracking devices that use cellular signals in addition to GPS to make a position estimate.

There are also software solutions addressing the problem of laptop theft.  Several firms offer software that will, after you report your laptop stolen, erase the data on the laptop's hard disk drive when the thief connects to the Internet. You don't get your laptop back, but the data is sent to you and in any case is erased from the laptop so your personal information is not available to the thief.
