How I Recovered data from my Corrupt USB Flash Drive

TestDisk is a free open source software which helps recovering data from a corrupt usb flash drive. Recently my flash drive got corrupted, and was asking to be formatted under windows once plugged in. I tried opening the pen drive under several operating systems including windows xp, vista, windows 7, fedora, ubuntu etc. But in most of them, “Insert a Disk into drive x”  and “Drive is not formatted” error was popping up.
As the data in my removable drive was not that critical, I started experimenting with different free data recovery softwares. Out of them, TestDisk, turned out to be the best in recovering my lost FAT32 partition.

How to Recover Files using TestDisk

Common symptoms or errors seen when a drive gets corrupted is, Windows Explorer shows primary partition as raw or unformatted and Windows prompts this error message.
“The drive is not formatted, do you want to format it now?”
To recover a partition or repair a file system, you must run TestDisk with full administrator privileges. In Windows Vista, right click Testdisk.exe and select “run as administrator” option.

To recover partition from a media image or repair a filesystem image, run

• testdisk image.dd to create a raw disk image
  
• testdisk image.E01 to recover files from an Encase EWF image
  
• testdisk 'image.*' if the Encase image is split into several files.
  

If the partition was reformatted into other file system use these steps given below.

• run TestDisk,
• select the hard disk and the partition type
• choose Advanced
• select the partition
• choose Type,
• enter the value corresponding to the previous filesystem
• choose Boot
• choose RebuildBS
• List
• If you can see your files, choose Write and confirm
• In Analyse, choose to rewrite the partition with the correct partition type.

Orkut Accounts being Hacked :A Reality

A researcher Susam Pal published today an interesting advisory about some vulnerabilities affecting Orkut - the famous social networking website, owned by Google.
There are several cases like -Sometimes the application may lock out the user to the main page when an operation fails, asking the user to login again, but failing to logout the user while doing it. This could confuse the users into thinking that they logged out.
And Now a hacker can use this stage for hacking the users account.At this stage the "orkut_state" cookie can still be used to login successfully, even if the user logged out. This is probably due to a failure to mark the session as expired on the server side.
How to?-A Technical Description(Never use this info to hack any others  account)
On successful Orkut login, the following cookies are set:-
1. Domain: .www.orkut.com Cookie: orkut_state
2. Domain: .google.com Cookie: SID
3. Domain: www.google.com Cookie: LSID

The second and the third cookies are responsible for another flaw which
is described in this advisory. In the login page of Orkut, the login
form appears from google.com in an inline frame and the form inputs are
submitted back to google.com. Hence these cookies are set for the domain
google.com and www.google.com.

If an attacker manages to steal the SID and LSID cookies of the user,
he can gain access to the compromised account even after the user has
been logged out as described in 'Vulnerability' section.

In case of unsuccessful authentication during a session, when the
user finds himself logged out, if he leaves the browser unattended,
a trespasser can login to his account simply by accessing a valid URL
for his account as mentioned in 'Vulnerability' section.

Vulnerability:-
When an Orkut user fails to authenticate himself during a session (say,
while deleting a community), the user is redirected to a login page
where the user has to enter his password to login again. At this stage,
ideally the session should be disabled and should be enabled only after
the user re-authenticates himself. However, the session associated with
SID and LSID cookies remain alive at the server side. Therefore, it is
not safe to abandon the session at this stage. An attacker can set these
cookies in his browser and access the compromised account by visiting
http://www.gmail.com/, https://www.google.com/accounts/ManageAccount,
etc.

Orkut has suffered from other vulnerabilities in the past, including XSS, script insertion, information disclosure, and a worm which propagated malware:

But some users have managed to hack the activation procedure of Microsoft Office professional 2010 RC version which appears to be very simple as it only needs some files which we already have when installing the beta MS Office 2010 version. The two files which needs to be replaced seems to be tokens.dat and pkeyconfig-office.xrm-ms. The procedure for MS office 2010 crack is already available throughout major forums, where an user named SoLoR has made a script called ActivateOffice2010beta.7z which does the whole cracking procedure for you.
Since this version of MS office 2010 RC 14.0.4734.1000 is already cracked though some easy hacks, I don’t think Microsoft will release this as a final version now. So wait for an other RC build from Microsoft with this loop hole patched.
